RACING

There is absolutely no pressure to race here at Hub Velo CC, but if you are inclined to have a go, there are plenty of opportunities, and you’ll be doing so with plenty of company! Amongst us we have riders racing on Road, Cyclocross, MTB and Track. Hub Velo CC are a registered club under British Cycling and Cycling Time Trials.

Road

Our local closed circuit road races happen at Lee Valley Velopark on the outdoor, floodlit one mile circuit, Hog Hill (Redbridge Cycling Centre), Hillingdon and Crystal Palace. There are usually races at these venues both mid-week and on weekends throughout the year except winter. Road races are held on quieter roads and our members usually compete in regional racing around the home counties.

You’ll be racing under British Cycling regulations, meaning you’ll need a British Cycling race licence, gaining points and working up the race categories based on your race rankings.

Cyclocross

Fancy getting a bit muddy? Cyclocross (CX for short) is very popular amongst HVCC members. The season runs through the cooler months from September to February, and courses are typically held in parkland or open fields, which bring a variety of terrain types and vary in terms of technicality, usually with obstacles such as steep banks, barriers, stairs and even flyovers to name but a few!

CX races are held under British Cycling regulations.

Time Trials

If you’re all about racing against the clock, time trials (or TTs) are held on the open road outside of London.

The most common distances are 10 and 25 miles and are usually ridden on a time-trial specific bike or a road bike.

Hill climbs take place from August onwards, often featuring weight saving modifications done to the extreme on many riders bikes and each event often attracts a great spectacle.

You’ll be racing under the Cycling Time Trials regulations, so no race licences are required.

Track Cycling

London is home to two velodromes, both of which have featured in the Olympic games. Lee Valley, built for the 2012 Games, is our local indoor velodrome, which has a number of track sessions with an accreditation process and a track league racing over the winter.

Herne Hill Velodrome, south of the river, is an outdoor 450m track built in 1891, with a range of organised sessions catering for all levels of track cycling experience as well as racing in the warmer months.

Mountain Biking

London and the South East isn’t exactly renowned for its mountain biking, although there are a few opportunities to put your bike handling skills to test around a MTB course at speed. We have semi-regular organised rides from the shop around the trails in Epping Forest, and occasionally further afield.
